Starting a new tradition
Submitted by Krisann Blair on Fri, 12/10/2004 - 14:05.
This year I began a new tradition. On December 8 from this year on I will write a holiday letter and complete my Christmas Cards. Why this specific date you ask? Well that is easy - December 8 is my mother's birthday. She loved Christmas and taught me to love Christmas and taught e the basics of being organized for Christmas. This was the 2nd Christmas since she passed away and I thought starting this tradtion is a way of keeping her memory alive during the season.

new tradition
Hi Krisann! My mom, also a real Christmas woman, has been gone for about 3 years also. Every year we went to my mom & dad's house for Christmas Eve - even after my dad passed away. We found out that she had cancer on Dec 17 and that it was terminal, which made Christmas that year the most important Christmas with her, because it would be her last. I still have trouble with Christmas celebrations, but I am inspired by your idea of the letter.Thank you, I will use that this year.....and by the way, I ended up with all of her Christmas stuff--both a blessing and a curse, since I had a ton of it myself!! Take care!

New Traditions
When my children were very young, I came across a toy reindeer in a charity shop. It holds an empty sack, so I'm guessing that it once held a gift of some sort. Each year, it's filled with treats, (lollies, chocolates, etc), and sits in the living room. The children aren't allowed to touch the reindeer until an adult yells "Raid the Reindeer!", then they can run to the reindeer and choose a treat. If they've been especially good, they may get to 'raid' more than once a day- and they never know when the yell may go up! It's a silly little thing really but they absolutely love it. It's one of our favourite traditions. We also have 'Empty the Egg' at Easter, with a hollow plastic egg.
I love traditions old and new, and I'm intrigued by typical traditions from 'across the pond', hailing as I do from England. I'd like to maybe adopt a few into our family Christmas.
