I would like to decorate my

I would like to decorate my home with the theme Christmas at Grandma's.  I'd like to feel like I had stepped back in time, possibly 1930 to 1954 or so.  Any ideas?

Just remember your favorite

Just remember your favorite things about being at your Grandma's at Christmastime.  Gingerbread, Teacakes, divinity, Sugar Cookies....... Put the smells of Grandma's house in your holiday.  Whether it was apples and cinnamon, oranges and apples, gingerbread etc. or a combination of them all.

Have a time of decorating a real tree with strung popcorn and cranberries, paper chains and a homemade silver star on top. Use Candles to light the room in the evening, but be sure to keep an eye on them(if you have little children you may forgo the candles)

Sing carols together or put on a favorite CD that may remind you of Grandma.  Read the Christmas Story to the little ones.

I think for me the most significant reminders of Grandma's Christmas are the smells and baking cookies. Hope this helps some.  My Grandsons love baking cookies and making Christmas candy.  They are 7 and 8. This year the oldest wants to make a gingerbread house. It will be our first.

Decorate with Stockings and Teddy Bears, Christmas Story books, a train going around underneath the Tree.

Don't forget to use pinecones and pine branches to help add wonderful natural beauty and smells to your Christmas.  And Red berries of various kinds. The Kitchen is the central place of activity in Grandma's house.

Keep it simple, and have a great Christmas. I think Christmas at Grandma's is timeless and there's no set rule because every Grandmother is unique.  Let us know how it goes. Charlotte Britt Bolyer.

Thanks Charlotte.  You've

Thanks Charlotte.  You've given me many great ideas, and now it's off to my journal to start organizing these ideas into a truly unforgettable Christmas.

You are very welcome

You are very welcome Constance!  Let me know how it all turns out.  I know it will be wonderful.

As you can tell by my name

As you can tell by my name I love Dragons, and actually our living room has a dragon theme year round. Depending on the season or holiday depends on what dragons are out. But at Christmas times the dragons multiply. I have so many dragons for winter and Christmas that they are everywhere in that room, lol I love em.

Believe it or not thats not my favorite theme room I have at Christmas, maybe because I only put this one up once a year. Our family room has a thespian theme. We put up a tree with ornaments I have made saying each part one of my 4 kids have done in a play, or what stage hand they did. We have decoration done in the style of each play they have done, "A Christmas Carol", "Guys and Dolls", Afternoon by the seaside"... etc. Some of the decorations are hard to come up with but its fun and we add more every year as they are in more plays. We are having trouble coming up with the comedy/tragedy faces for center stage on the tree though. If anyone has any ideas would love to hear them.

Thanks.

Ok I thought I would share

Ok I thought I would share my theme rooms with everyone - I really like doing this and I started simply by having"theme areas" like my mantle was Santa, coffee table was nativity, etc. and gradlually over the years I have progressed to rooms!  This past Christmas was the first year I was in my new house and I was starting fresh so to speak and I was able to really do themes up for the season.  Here is how my themes were:

Dining room - this room is in the center of our public areas and is a place we spend a lot of time - it can be seen from the living room and the kitchen and you walk through it to get other parts of the house and the back door.  So this room is the Nativity and Angel Room - there are 2 trees in this room. - one small table top one that has nothing but angels on itand one that is 6 ft tall that is decorated in Nativity items and angels.  At the bottom of the tree - which is placed up on a small table to give it height - is a beautiful church I was given at my mother's funeral as well as some additional tree top angels I had picked up one year at target for 75% off. I also have free standing nativity sets sitting around the room (this is what I collect and am always on the lookout for new ones - my latest one is a musical nativity that I found in Greenville, SC when I was there this summer).  I also purchased an ornament with baby Jesus and Santa - just not sure if it should go in my nativity room or my santa room.

On the table I have angel napkin holders that my mother made during her "ceramic" phase when I was little. I use my Johnson Brothers Victorian Christmas china along with gold chargers and an advent wreath as our center piece.  This year to make life easier I am going to purchase a small ready made wreath to use in the center and then I will place my advent candles inside it with my Christ candle in the center inside a beautiful Longaberger candle holder given to me by one of my dearest friends last Christmas.

So for me the dining room is where all the things important in my life come together  - religious, family (both living and those who have passed away) and friends.

I hope to put up a picture of the dining room from this past year soon.

Angel Theme

After the children were grown and in college I changed to an Angel Theme.  The Tree is decorated in angels of different sizes and styles with an angel topper.  Cherubs and angel covered balls or hearts bring up the angel count. The mantel has an angel covering. An angel card holder hangs on the wall next to the door.  Willow Tree angel nativity is on the piano with a flying angel hanging on the wall above it.  Wine, mauve, white  and gold are the color theme. There are angels in each bathroom with tea lights.  Willow Tree angels in the kitchen and family room with various angel toppers with moving angel wings or fibre optic lighting.  We have a couple of Christmas parties for our staff and friends.  One of the games we play is to see who can guess how many angels are on the tree and in the rooms.  The one who guess is closest wins a nice prize -- no not an angel.  Each year I try to add a new angel ornament or decoration to the rooms.  The angels were the first to celebrate and annoucne the birth of Christ.  I believe we should celebrate more in life.  The angels are a reminder to CELEBRATE!  Celebrate life, family friends, health and the love of Emmanuel -- God with us!

I'd love to see a picture of Krisann's dining room.  It sounds beautiful!

Krisann's Dining Room Theme

It sounds beautiful Krisann!  Your Santa and The Christ Child ornament belong in your Santa Room.  Either would be great, but to see Santa bowing beside the baby Jesus in a room full of Santa's sure humbles your heart and helps not just you but everyone who see it realize the true meaning of Christmas.  I remember when I first saw the Statue of Santa and the Christchild for the first time ever.  It spoke volume's to me.  It is about a 18 inches tall and 20 inches wide.  I had to put it on lay-a-way, but I had to have it.  It is my favorite piece to put out every year.

Theme Rooms

I started doing theme rooms last year. It made it so much easier and more fun to shop for decorations. My living room has sort of a lodge/cabin decor, so we have some reindeer, moose and bear things, etc. We have the least decorations for this room so far. My entryway has a nativity theme. Since I feel this is the most important reason for Christmas, I want it to be the first thing someone sees when they enter my home. I have a star-shaped ornament hanging from the light fixture, and several nativity scenes and decorations. My dining room has a candy theme. I have peppermint striped ribbon wrapped around my baker's rack, and gumdrop trees. My centerpiece is a peppermint striped cake stand which has peppermint striped candles on it and greenery around it with pieces of candy strewn about. I also buy lots of candy and put it in jars all around. That one is a lot of fun! The kitchen is gingerbread. We make a gingerbread house and display it, and we have a gingerbread doll, and little gingerbread ornaments hanging from the cabinet door handles. My girls' room is decorated with angels, and my son's with snowmen. My bedroom has a theme of "wrapped gifts" which makes it a great place to put the gifts once they are wrapped. And my laundry room is "Santa's laundry" I have a small rope that I hang up, with miniature gloves and mittens, and last year from Current, I got these "Santa's underwear" candy holders which are made out of felt. They look like red one-piece pajamas. They look really cute hanging up. Also, any Christmas cards that I receive with pictures relating to any of these themes are displayed in their respective rooms. I can't wait to decorate now! - Theresa

Theme Rooms

Hi Theresa,

I am not really into themes, but I had to comment on the facct that your entryway is what Christmas is all about.  I applaud you. Laughing  I decided to write to tell you my story about a very special Nativity set.  My Grandmother had an outstanding Nativity set and creche.  Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus were made of ceramic.  Baby Jesus' eyes were made of glass, and they were the most beautiful eyes I have ever seen in something like this.  The rest of the pieces were made of paper mache, all painted with great detail.  There were the 3 Wise Men, 2 shepards with lambs, a cow, camel and donkey.  There was a star that was lit using a c7 night light bulb, white of course.  This was in the 3 foot long, by 2 feet high, by 1 foot deep creche.  These pieces were big.  Baby Jesus was 6 or 7 inches long, so you can imagine the size of the rest of the pieces.  I'm not sure how my Grandmother came to have this Nativity.  I'm sure she probably told me, but I don't remember.  My Grandmother passed in August of 1972.  She had not left the Nativity to anyone, but the whole family knew that it had to belong to me.  I would stand there and stare at it for a long time.  Even as a child, and it got to the point, as I got old enough to be careful when touching, that I was invited to help my Grandmother set it up.  I was 12 when she passed.  In 1975, we were involved in a flood.  7 feet of water in an 8 foot basement.  All of the Christmas decorations, including the Nativity were in the basement. Cry  We were taken out in canoe's, all of my neighbors too.  We were not allowed into our basements to get anything, because the water that was still in them, was electrified, even though they had turned the electricity off to the whole area.  The circuit breaker box was still under water, and it had been on when the flood occurred.  Since then, I am no longer materialistic (I was 12 when my Grandmother died.), because it was very easy to realize that it was better that we were safe, than to lament the "things" we lost.  But I still think about that Nativity all the time.  Since the invention of the internet, I have looked online trying to replace it, but unfortunately, have found nothing even close.  I have chosen to start buying the Lenox Rennaissance Nativity, because that is the closest I've found, though not in size, to the Nativity I lost.  I thought you might enjoy hearing about my Nativity, being you place yours in your entryway, so that tells me it's important to you.

Nativity

Cathie, Thank you for sharing your story. What a heartbreaking loss, but how wonderful that you were able to put it into perspective at such a young age. I love all the nativity items that are available now. We live near Frankenmuth in Michigan, which has a large year-round Christmas store named Bronner's. They have a huge nativity display, which is actually the whole city of Bethlehem. It is just beautiful. It would cost a fortune to buy all of it, but I can always dream! Theresa

I spoke at Bronner's several

I spoke at Bronner's several years ago - it is where I first discovered that I wanted to collect nativity's and that all Christmas scenes did not have to be "villiages"  but could be a scene from the world as it was when Jesus was born.  One day I will start collecting the pieces - right now I just have the basic nativity set from Fontani - who makes what I consider the "real" Christmas village :)

Bronner's CHRISTmas Wonderland

I would've loved to hear you speak at Bronner's! It is one of my favorite places in the world! My husband's family lives very close, so when we visit them, we try to make time for a trip to Bronner's. On our last visit this past May, we spent over 2 hours at Bronner's (I could've spent lots longer, especially now that they have a snack bar). I bought the Bronner's DVD and love to watch it anytime. -Marie

Nativity 2....

I have heard of Bronner's. I wish we had one here on the east coast. It's been really nice chatting with you. I found this website by accident, but I'm really glad I did. I'm enjoying it a lot. I hope I get to talk to more Christmas lovers. :) My family has always thought I was nuts. lol But they too love Christmas, just not as involved as I am. lol I laughed when I first came to the site to see the poll about playing Christmas music. lol I play a musical keyboard, and yes, I do play, and sing Chrsitmas music all year long. I love the religious carols, but I love to play Need A Little Christmas. It is so much fun to play it. lol It was really nice to see that I'm not the only Christmas nut around. lol It's really nice to be here.

Theme Decorating

Hi Krisann and Beautiful Holiday Women...

I've only done a "theme" once. It was while Michael and I lived in student housing at seminary in Portland, Or. For some reason I was into this major pink theme. It had a Victorian touch and it was elegant. Our student housing living room was very small and the huge pine tree took up about 1/4 of the room - from floor to ceiling. I had soft pink balls, crocheted stars my grandmother had made, little white bows and cardinals. Just reminiscing makes me smile. It was so beautiful.

This year our daughters with their hubby's and 5 little ones have moved to the Phoenix Valley - so Christmas will be fun and I look forward (as a newbie here) to not only getting organized, but getting some new ideas.
